بينما قد يرى البعض أن المبادرة في القارة القطبية الجنوبية رمزية إلى حد كبير، شدّد بانغ على أهميتها العملية. وفقًا لما قاله بانغ، فإن المناخ القطبي القاسي يعد تذكيرًا صارخًا بأن الصحافة يجب أن تعود دائمًا إلى الحقيقة والبراغماتية.
